As William Fiennes wrote in the "London Review of Books", 'Mitchell was the laureate of the waters around New York', and in "The Bottom of the Harbor", he records the lives and practices of the rivermen, with love and understanding and a sharp eye for the eccentric and strange. This is some of the best journalist ever written.
Joseph Mitchell came to New York from North Carolina the day after the 1929 stock market crash. After eight years as a reporter and feature writer at various newspapers, he joined the staff of The New Yorker, where he remained until his death in 1996 at the age of eighty-seven. His other books include McSorley's Wonderful Saloon, My Ears Are Bent, Up in the Old Hotel, Old Mr. Flood, and Joe Gould's Secret.

Average quality reproductions of Ten Tec ads and old factory photos also detract from this book.

The author fails to delve into the development of a single Ten Tec transceiver in any detail. His genuine love of the music and the people who make it with him just jumps off the pages.
This is an inspiring story of a man who has overcome considerable obstacles both social and physcial but has retained his essential positive energy. This "Vigilante Life" certainly doesn't seem likely to get it done.. If you look at them from the earliest to the latest, though, you find that the early ones are written in the omniscent third person and then, as the years go on, the voice goes into the first person, increasingly confiding on the page. There have been several excellent books on Wyatt Earp and Tombstone that cast him in a realistic and none-to-flattering light, and even the movies "Wyatt Earp" and "Tombstone" portrayed a much darker version of Wyatt Earp than the stereotype that
