Donna Laframboise is a former National Post and Toronto Star columnist. During the 1990s she wrote investigative feature articles for Canadian magazines and newspapers. Her first book, The Princess at the Window: A New Gender Morality, was published in 1996 by Penguin Canada. Between 1998 and 2001 Ms. Laframboise was a vice president of the Canadian Civil Liberties Association.
However, the book concludes with the youngest of the pieces, "The Rivermen," from 1959, whose ending, an apology from one man to another (also, as it happens, named Joe), reads: "'As far as I'm concerned,' he said, 'the purpose of life is to stay alive and to keep on staying alive as long as you possibly can.'" As the essayist and historian Luc Sante writes in his estimable forward to this centennial edition of "The Bottom of the Harbor": "This book of ostensibly journalistic feature stories turns out to hold at its core some of the fundamental questions of existence.". (Of course, there are always exceptions, and you know your child best!) I share my collection with my younger children, but I never leave them alone with any of those books.
