Kathleen Duey is the author of numerous books for young readers, including the American Diaries series and the Survival series. She is also an avid horsewoman and a history buff.
Things like this might seem minor, but if the book is inaccurate with respect to things that I can readily verify, how can I trust it to be accurate with respect to things I can't? It doesn't seem like any great effort was put into bringing this book up to date for the current edition.
Finally, there's an awful lot of filler material in here that feels like it was added just to bring the book up to a suitable length. I've long vanquished hydrogenated oils from my cupboard but canola was a real surprise. It is a quick read (~2 hours) that makes you think about what you read long after it is over.. 8 pages of timelines, sources and an index at the end.
This book is part of a larger series (The History of the Civil War Series). I like this one better than Bears in Chairs. Great book to keep the whole family entertained!
