Czeslaw Milosz (1911-2004) was born in Lithuania and was Professor of Slavic Languages and Literature at the University of California, Berkeley. In 1980 he was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature.
You know those rare books, where you will be happily reading and some dolt will come along and interrupt you with things like, "nice weather we are having" or "the building is on fire and you best vacate" and you actually feel yourself transforming into some small lethal mammal with claws and fangs and horns and you look up and give them that glare, that "CAN'T YOU SEE I'M READING" glare and hope that they will vanish into a cloud of fog or drop through a trap door or whatever will allow you to return happily to your book? Well I am 23% through and this is one of those books.
Okay, I finished it and it completely lived up to my expectations. The book also appears to have been poorly edited, with many typographical (if not grammatical) errors, and several cases of ambiguous pronouns. He was God and Man.
